There is no shortage of issues awaiting the Georgia General Assembly during this year's session now getting under way. Among them is Speaker Glenn Richardson's GREAT Plan to do away with property taxes on school and replace them with a sales tax; the effort to bail out troubled Grady Hospital in Atlanta and figuring out what to do about the metro area's traffic congestion, which seems to grow worse by the day.

The Marietta City Council is expected Dec. 12 to vote to float $7 million in bonds with which to upgrade the Marietta Conference Center & Resort, which is showing its age. The 11-year old, 199-room facility is overdue for a makeover and has been a drain on city coffers since its opening.

Cobb County is building a new sister-community relationship with Seongdong-Gu, a province of Seoul, South Korea. A delegation of 18 Cobb business, civic and political leaders recently visited that city and soon will host a reciprocal delegation here from Seongdong-Gu. Do you think such sister-city arrangements are more show or substance? And what other international communities might Cobb consider establishing such relations with?

Halloween is nearly here. The season for tricking and treating. What are some of the unusual Halloween tricks you've played, or some of the most unusual treats you have gotten?

Drought suggestions  10/19/2007
Water, water everywhere - except here, it seems. Cobb and most of Georgia are in the grip of a severe drought. The showers we enjoyed Thursday and Friday were a welcome respite, but only a figurative drop in the bucket in terms of relieving the drought.
