With one week to go in the regular season, the playoff picture is starting to take shape in Cobb County football.

A few things were decided last Friday, North Cobb and Walton both clinched region titles and Pebblebrook assured its berth as the No. 3 seed from Region 5AAAA, but this week's games will determine who goes where in the first round.

Beginning in Region 5AAAAA, North Cobb has locked up the No. 1 seed while Harrison and Marietta took No. 2 and No. 3 respectively because of the Hoyas' 45-18 win over the Blue Devils on Sept. 28. What remains to be seen is who will take the final spot.

Etowah (6-3) is tied with Kennesaw Mountain (5-4) with identical 4-3 region records, but the Eagles have the inside track thanks to a 22-20 win over the Mustangs on Sept. 21. To procure the berth, Etowah must defeat visiting McEachern on Friday or hope the Mustangs lose to South Cobb.

With playoff pairings with Region 7AAAAA, Region 5AAAAA champ North Cobb will host defending co-state champion Peachtree Ridge, who went to the title game last year as the region's No. 4 seed. Harrison will draw No. 3 seed Mill Creek, which has gone 7-3 on the year. Marietta will travel to face the loser of the Norcross-North Gwinnett game to determine the region champ and either Etowah or Kennesaw Mountain will travel to face the winner.

In Region 6AAAAA, Walton secured its subregion crown and No. 1 seed with only Wheeler remaining on the schedule. The Raiders are likely to draw 7-2 Parkview or 5-4 South Gwinnett depending on the outcome of their games.

Sprayberry locked its berth to the playoffs with a 3-1 stand in the subregion, but depending on a possible three-way tie on the other side of the region between Roswell, Chattahoochee and Centennial, the Yellow Jackets' seeding has yet to be determined.

In Class AAAA, Pebblebrook has ridden a five-game winning streak to grab the No. 3 seed out of Region 5AAAA, and will hold it regardless of the outcome of its game with Sequoyah this Friday.

The Falcons (6-3, 6-2) will travel to face the winner of the Northwest Whitfield-Rome game this Friday to determine Region 7AAAA's No. 2 seed.

Whitefield Academy looks to have locked up at least a No. 3 seed as well. The Wolfpack face Region 5A leader Fellowship Christian on Friday at home. Whitefield could still win the region with a win Friday over Fellowship and a loss from Landmark Christian, which plays Our Lady of Mercy.

The pairings for the first round of the playoffs remain unset with Region 7A's Lincoln County, Twiggs County and Warren County locked in a three-way tie for the region lead.

The playoffs begin Nov. 16 with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

I don't think the seedings from Region 7 have been determined yet.
