Something will have to give this week.
Throughout Cobb County, girls basketball teams will resume region competition today, which means the end of several winnings streaks and the first region loss for many teams. After all, someone has to lose sometime.
After dropping a spot to No. 6 in the Class AAAAA polls, Marietta returns to the court this week on a three-game winning streak. The Lady Blue Devils (7-3, 4-1 Region 5AAAAA) will take on unranked region foe Kennesaw Mountain today. The Lady Mustangs (10-2, 3-2 Region 5AAAAA) are riding a seven-game winning streak, but hasn't played a game since Dec. 22.
A win by Kennesaw Mountain could knot the Region 5AAAAA standings with three teams - Marietta, Kennesaw Mountain and McEachern - tied for second.
Undefeated Campbell also has a big week in front of it. The Lady Spartans (10-0, 2-0 Region 6AAAAA) are ranked No. 9 according to the Gasports.com coaches' poll, but will have tough region contests against Centennial today and Lassiter on Friday. All three teams are 2-0 in region competition and tied atop the standings.
McEachern, who entered the polls this week at No. 10, will have a light week. The Lady Indians only game will be today when they host Woodstock. Both teams will be attempting to rebound from losses that closed out the 2008 calendar year and start '09 on a positive note.
In Class AAAA, Osborne continues to streak past its foes. The Lady Cardinals opened the season with six straight victories and are likely to pick up win No. 7 on Friday when they host Hiram (0-8, 0-3 Region 7AAAA), who is still looking for its first win of the season.
Georgia High School Association newcomer North Cobb Christian will get a test this week as it plays its first Region 5A game. The Lady Eagles (3-3) will travel to Galloway (7-3, 2-0 Region 5A) in Atlanta.
