SOS to the Cobb County School Board: I know you don't want to take your eyes off the SPLOST ball for even a moment, but allow me to wave some heffalumps and woozles in your direction.

A convicted felon who pleaded guilty just last week in Federal Court to three firearms violations was allowed away from house arrest Friday to be an honored speaker at a Lindley Middle School character-ed assembly. "Motivating and empowering the kids" was the excuse given by the school's principal for welcoming rapper T.I., a former cocaine dealer whose claim to fame is rhyming "money, hoes, cars and clothes" in his lyrics.

Certainly the assembly's 400 lucky seventh-graders will follow the 27-year-old father of five's advice to stay in school and become model citizens - just after emulating his extensive arsenal of unregistered, illegal machine guns and silencers. What a pathetic role model, Principal Brown. …

And beyond felonious rapping rappers, what life lessons are overly litigious open borders advocates modeling for Cobb teens three times a week in at least one area high school?

MALDEF, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, is known for filing dozens of lawsuits aimed at forcing state-mandated bilingual education in public schools. They've sued to suppress successful ballot initiatives banning the practice in California and Arizona, and have repeatedly sought to stop universities from using standardized test scores like the SATs in their admissions process. MALDEF promotes lowering educational standards to accommodate Latinos, says Discoverthenetworks.org, and its founder, Mario Obledo, said in 1998, "California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn't like it should … go back to Europe."

Yes, this is the same group that's been slandering Cobb law enforcement officers.

MALDEF, which doesn't distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants in its "civil rights" advocacy and wants free college tuition for illegals, wants into our high schools but apparently doesn't want to hassle with guidelines imposed by the Cobb Chamber's Partners in Education program. Instead, it's deployed a "youth leadership coordinator," Stephanie Emling, to Osborne High to run a "MALDEF-sponsored weekly workshop" on empowerment, according to a recent MDJ article and the MALDEF Web site.

When I queried Cobb school's spokesman Jay Dillon on MALDEF/Emling's ability to interact with high school students, he replied Emling is "not a lawyer or activist," and has helped students get scholarships. He says outside advocacy groups are prohibited from "running" clubs, and denies an agenda other than helping the school.

However you want to characterize MALDEF's presence, it's worth noting Emling serves also on the Project South leadership team, a "movement building" group with close ties to last summer's Atlanta Global Day of Action, a freaky gathering of sometimes-militant worldwide organizers whose slogan is "Another world is possible, another U.S. is necessary."

Amidst all this empowerment, one must wonder what a fury would be raised if the Christian Coalition, the Minutemen or another politically-motivated group was allowed into our schools to counsel kids. Even if they facilitated student scholarships, there'd be hell to pay everywhere.

So, school board, who's running this show, anyway?

Time to take back control of our counry!

MALDEF’s only goal is to destroy American sovereignty by legitimizing Mexican illegal alien invaders in America.
Joseph Kesterson says -
You obviously need to go back to lit class because u didn't stay on topic at all are u angry because of the MALDEF or simply because TI was aloud to speak in public at a middle school as a role model? PS: you can't hold TI responsible for the choices your kids make

It is common knowledge that the CCSD is really run by the administration - the school board is not engaged and has no concept about what is happening in the schools themselves. Whatever is PC goes...

Rather than lower the standards and make American kids suffer, why not just put all Latino kids in special ed. Can't get much lower than that!

How utterly dumb can Americans be to let groups like MALDEF, MECHA, LA RAZA, and others destroy their schools. Come on.

6 years ago I talked my daughter into taking my daughter into letting me bring my 4 year old granddaughter into Cobb County from Tampa to put her in pre K because she was not learning in the pre K in Tampa. There was so much Spanish being spoken and she was not learning like she should. She did really good in Cobb County schools but now we are having the same problems that Florida had. It is not our fault that Latinos are so far behind and I object to lowering our education standards to educate people who should not be here illegally. If people want to come to America they need to learn our language before they come.

There is no question but what MALDEF is a proponent of open borders and an apologist for illegal aliens. They and La Raza (the race) are two of the most repulsive and racist organizations going. As Obledo has been quoted, this is a fight for American culture and the rule of law. They pretend to give lip service to the rule of law, yet they flaunt it. As Locke said: for evil to succeed only requires good men do nothing. It is past time to stand up, men.

Laura, you keep up the great work. Hold the feet of the governing bodies to be to the FIRE! You are a voice that needs to be heard by the masses. I applaud all the energy and time you put into your column. When you speak the truth, I hear my very own thoughts! I wish you could post a column every single day. I'd be glad to pay for an additional subscription of the paper just to share with my neighbors. As for the Cobb County School Board: LINDSEY TIPPINS and BETTY GRAY are the only voices of reason I have heard! Lest we forget the laptop computer FIASCO! As for following the bouncing SPLOST III BALL, I plan to remind everyone of the laptop FIASCO and watch the BALL bounce right out of sight!

...or better yet, put them on a Greyhound, headed south of the border. Our kids can't afford much more dumbing down. And furthermore, ALL of Cobb County officials need to stop all the pandering to the radical, open border Latino Action (against law & order) groups!!! This includes our friends, GALEO!

I’m a little sick and tired of everyone spouting, "If a Christian did that"! So why doesn't one do it? At the very least it would expose the schools' hypocrisy if not actually gain back lost rights.

Crap like this is partly why I'm going to homeschool my 1st grader starting next school year. Maybe I can't control our pitiful society, but I can control how much influence it has on my daughter! We have to be in the world, but the Lord says not to become part of it. He also says we as parents are responsible for the upbringing and education of our children, to bring them up in the way of the Lord....public schools are far from the way of the Lord!
C. Sue Waldrop-Cobb County resident for 38 years!! says -
Please help get MALDEF out of our Cobb Schools-this grp might state they are only there to help but that is not their agenda in any shape or form. They are basically a "hate group" who will scream lies, slander anyone who speaks against illegals. You can bet they are only helping latinos and no other group. That right there should be against CCSD rules. Help them all or help none. Who do I write to at CCSD to express my displeasure with MALDEF being inside any Cobb County School. MALDEF has tried to turn Latinos against the Cobb County and Marietta Police Departments by telling lies about both departments. And this is the type of organization that is allowed inside Osborne High?? You can bet your last dollar that they are speaking against the police and probably even the CCSD while "empowering" students.
Patti says -
Who is running school boards everywhere? Who is running our country? Corporate elitists that's who. Doesn't matter if you are Republican or Democrat because they are both out, (to sell out) our country to the highest bidder.
Juan Galvan recipient of the scholarship you speak of and member of CREATE says -
Laura Armstrong, your support for this article is weak. You have no proof of any danger towards students at all. Just so you know I am also one of the many students who helped to have House Bill 280 passed in the senate. I have learned many things from Stephany, but most of all I have learned how to speak out and so I have a few questions for you. Why do you insist on suppressing a childs education? What good will come of our ending program? If you would like to know what good will come of the program then contact me at jgalvan252@yahoo.com. Maybe we can meet so that you can do a report on CREATE's members.
Gary Zuck says -
You need to get your facts straight. The program is about empowering students.
