MARIETTA - Despite a storm of criticism, Mulligan's Food and Spirits owner Mike Norman has ordered 100 more "Obama in '08" T-shirts featuring Curious George after being inundated with phone calls of people "begging" him to get more, he said.
But not all the phone calls have been positive, he said, which is one reason he chose to take the phone at the neighborhood bar and grill off the hook on Wednesday.
"We've been getting death threats and a lot of people calling cussing," Norman said. On Tuesday, about a dozen demonstrators protested at the restaurant.
Community leaders are denouncing the $15 T-shirt that features cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana and the phrase "Obama in '08."
Both County Chairman Sam Olens and Marietta Mayor Bill Dunaway agree Norman has a right to free speech. But, "Cobb County embraces diversity and the right for all to be treated with respect. The T-shirt and its overt racist tenor has no place in our society," Olens said.
Dunaway said he has met with local leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
"I do not share those views and am concerned about how our community is being portrayed. They are not representative of the positive race relations our community has worked together to forge," Dunaway said. "We welcome diversity and believe everyone in our community should be treated with respect."
The buzz began Tuesday when about a dozen protestors gathered outside Mulligan's, outraged over the
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the copyright and trademark owner to Curious George, has been following the media storm. Though Norman said the monkey on the T-Shirt is not an exact replica of Curious George, a spokesman for the publishing company said Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is weighing its options.
"We have seen the news reports of a local bar owner in Marietta allegedly selling T-shirts that depict the Curious George character in a racially offensive manner," spokesman Rick Blake said. "Houghton Mifflin Harcourt did not nor would we under any circumstances authorize or approve such a use which we find offensive and utterly out of keeping with the value that Curious George represents."
Norman said he was not worried.
"I didn't design them anyway," he said.
Back at the neighborhood bar and grill, people are flowing through the doors inquiring about the shirts. Bartender Bonnie Reilly handles most of the queries, but gets fired up over all the attention.
"People come here to hang out and keep to themselves. Now we're getting death threats, and I had this one creepy guy keep calling this morning," she said. "Who are the extremists now?"
Norman still defends the T-shirts, though he was sent a courier letter from the Muscular Dystrophy Association saying the organization did not want any of the money he collected. Norman had intended to donate proceeds from the T-shirt sales to the organization, he said.
Others in the community also want nothing to do with the T-shirts - from local politicians to business managers.
Ciro Cobarrubias, manager of Super Mercado Lavilla just down the street from Mulligan's, said he thinks Mulligan's needs to shift focus.
"They should be trying to get more business instead of bothering another race. I don't know-we don't have time to worry about things like that because we're so busy," he said.
Still, despite the hoopla, Norman said he has no regrets about selling the T-shirt.
"I don't want everyone to think I'm a jerk, but I'm not going to turn tail and run about this," he said. "I wish people would lighten up and stop taking things so seriously. There ain't no future in the past."

I look forward to the day that Marietta makes national news for NOT being racist or homophobic. I've lived a few blocks away from this place for 30 years. (I remember when it was a Taco Bell and we used to go there after church.) I am often sickened by the backwards redneck homilies that are posted on their sign. I was with a group of citizens who marched with Jesse Jackson from the Square up to Cumberland Mall on their 3 day walk to the MLK center. When we passed Mulligans', the patrons stood out on the sidewalk yelling disgusting racial epithets at us. (I am white but was still offended.) Things like this make me embarrased to tell people that I live in Marietta. As much as I am against the widening of Roswell Street, I wouldn't mind it if it wipes this place out. It's too bad that some people flaunt our right to free speech in such a hateful manner. I'm sure that's not what our founding fathers had in mind!
I respect the right of anyone to free speech but people should have self imposed limits. But isn't that an on going problem regardless of which side of an issue your on? The left has derided President Bush on what they think is his lack of "intelligence" for the last 8 years and called him a Chimp. The left thinks that its funny as long as its not someone on their side. What's glaringly apparent is the double standard that exists. Those protesters should find a more constructive pursuits, like maybe get a real job. But then again I need to be upstanding, maybe they lack the ability and "intelligence" to do so.
How sad...
I hope your business revenues go out the roof! Stand strong and be safe.
I have never liked the rantings on his sign but Marietta should have done something about it a long time ago and not get all their feathers all ruffled now.
I can't believe people are actually buying this shirt, which means they would venture to wear it in public also. They may as well stroll the square in a KKK outfit. They'd make the same impression. There is nothing funny about this shirt. The implication that Barack Obama is akin to a Monkey is disrespectul of who he is and his accomplishments to date. It is an erroneous comparison made by someone who won't bother to bring forth educated commentary, but instead choose to laze in the pool of ignorance. I hope Mike Norman and whomever he got the shirts from are sued to the point of closing this bar. Mr Norman is obviously not a responsible enough citizens to truly deserve the freedoms being an American has afforded him.
Good for him. 'Bout time someone starting sticking up for what they believe! And, since when did having black skin also mean having thin skin?
what about "its a black thing you woundt understand" shirts. make a stink about that!
Where was the outrage when Deputy Loren Lilly was killed by a drunken illegal? Where was the outrage when Kenny Shackleford and two friends were killed by a drunken illegal? Where was the outrage when Dustin Inman was killed and his mom paralyzed, you guessed it, by a drunken illegal? Mayor Dunaway and Commissioner Olens, why are you not speaking out against the lawbreakers in our county who are devastating our neighborhoods, dumbing down our schools and bankrupting our healthcare system? Mr. Norman is NOT breaking any laws and until our county is cleaned up of these invaders then our "leaders" need to be concerned elsewhere.
I remember the Jesse Jackson walk too and was also present. I don't recall any racist commentary from the bar nor patrons standing on the sidewalk. I do recall Jesse's race baiting commentary but never mind, it's acceptable from one side of the fence. Now what is that called? Is it hypocracy?
Right On! Mike Norman is an advocate for free speech and does alot of good in the community. He has and always will be a character. Wait until the Obama campaign starts attacking John McCain then the gloves will be off!!!
New day....same old ignorance. Just rise above the likes of people who cheer on this ugly man.
this is why we can't grow. this man and others like him are truly stuck on stupid. God help us all.......................
what are some white people afraid of? why are some white people so insecure? wisdom, is having respect for all. why do some white people have such a hard time with this? God bless us all................
I love this shirt...it is not racist....it is a representation of what a little girl saw...and she saw correctly.....obama hussein does look like curious george and that is a good thing, and good for a laugh only....lighten up down there.
It's always racist and offensive from the other side. It's funny to me how blacks can have all black colleges or black clothes and it's okay. Quit pointing your finger at everyone else and look at your own self!
you people truly just don't get it. black people have always been referred as monkeys, apes and other primates. don't you see that this is not funny. folks keep saying lighten up, it's not offensive. i say to you...it is quite offensive and you know it. grow up folks and evolve, you might just like it. i knew that Sen. Obama would bring out the best and the worst in people. we should all want to be in the latter. God help us all...............
I would like to challenge Mike Norman to read Obama's books: Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope--not just excerpts but in their entirety. Out of curiosity, I recently read both and developed a strong admiration for Senator Obama's intelligence, his courage, and his strong Christian values. I believe that Mr. Norman would be rather embarrassed at his T-shirt venture if he knew more about the Senator.
It does make me laugh, knowing how hateful the messages have been against Mexicans (and any other Spanish-speaking person, legal immigrant or not) that this bar is in an old Taco Bell.
I have lived here in Marietta for 19 years. Mulligan's Food and Spirits has been here for 16 years and I have never been there till tonight. I decided to go by to see what all the complaining was about. Well, all of the T-shirts have been sold. Oh well, there goes framing the T-shirt and putting it on my pool room wall. We ate dinner there and the barbecue sandwich was excellent. The meat tasted vary smoky and moist. I believe it was the best Georgia barbecue that I have ever eaten. I probably will go back there again. By the way I was voting for Obama till the information about Pastor Wright came out. I was vary disappointed that Obama had not shown better judgment in distancing himself, his family, and children from Pastor Wright a long time ago. I believe if we were able to cast our votes again, Hillery would be doing a lot better now. It will be a mistake for Obama to represent the Democratic Party in the General Election. Please do not interpret this as any racial issue. It is from a man of integrity issue.
why is it that the rev. wright can say horrible things about the USA and the dems justify it by saying that we are taking it all wrong? how can anyone justify the fact that the junior senator sat in that church for 20 years and never once thought to himself that his rev. was a racist? whay doesn't someone ask his wife why she hates the USA? , but WOW what a double standard. my response to everyone who says the shirts are racist...if this was a black man selling shirts with an image of john mccain, every black activist in the USA would scream that we are taking it all wrong and the naacp would dispatch a team of lawyers to "defend his rights as an American to the mccain shirts". what makes this any different?
Everything's funny until it happens to someone you support........I agree with "Between Austell and Powder Springs". Why is it that President Bush can be called a Chimp....and when the same thing is implied about Obama, it's all of a sudden racist?? Anyone who's ever watched the show knows that Curious George is really a smart little monkey. It's time that everyone stopped wearing their feelings on their sleeves. Think about it....we're all discriminated against....fat people, women, anyone who looks different...bald men, old folks, people with big noses, those who wear glasses.....folks of every race, creed & religion. Listen to Bill Cosby, who is telling folks to take accountability for themselves & stop blaming everyone else for their problems. Let's take all this negative energy & do something constructive!!
I had applied for a job in Marietta City, but after reading this article and seeing the picture of a monkey with a banana with "OBAMA IN 08" written under it, I respectfully withdraw my application. Obviously Marietta and Cobb County is not as progressive as I once thought. This is pathetic and pitiful. It isn't 1908, it's 2008!
If it was you running for office and someone used this type gesture for you how would you receive this? If it hurts another then one should go about things in a different manner. All money is not good money. It may seem ok to you for you are the one in the making of the shirt and the profit from it, but the people you say you are giving the money to don't want any part of it, where does that leave you? By yourself............
If we believe the lies of evolution, we all came from monkeys!!
Norman you are doing a great job!!!! I love it! Keep them coming! You know who loves ya baby! You have alot of support throughtout the state than you realize. I will see you tomorrow to buy those lovely shirts! By the way you can always donate the money to another cause the MDA are just cutting their own throats.
State of Cobb County-Diversity in-White people out!
