EDITOR'S NOTE: With Around Town's contributors taking advantage of the long holiday weekend and a getting a break from their usual labors, today we bring you instead a selection of responses shared by readers of MDJOnline.com in reaction to recent MDJ stories ...

WellStar CEO fired ... A decade in wrote - It's true pay raises are pitiful. What's worst is a lot of non management positions hourly pay rate are capped at a ridiculous level $15-$16. No matter how long you work there, you won't get an increase in your pay rate UNLESS you are the FAVORITE. Shhh, not suppose to know that. Surveys, please we are to score a 5 so wellstar can continue with their best of this and that award. Shhh, not suppose to know that either. There's a problem with Medicare and Medicaid billing alright. but it's not a software problem, it's a greed problem. Shhhh, really not suppose to know that one. How about WellStar pass the savings on from Dr. Simone's former pay to it's employese with a respectable raise for once? I know I had to laugh at that one too.

Anonymous wrote - Serious cracks in the WellStar Hospital. People should beware! My neighbor caught a staph infection there and so did his wife. The hospital admitted it came from there, but refused to provide help to heal the staff infection. He died, she lived. I have heard many many other cases of mistreatments. Why do they continue to greatly expand and build a giant hospital virtually covering all of Cobb - MONEY. Where is the spirit of healing and humanity - GONE. In 10 or 15 years this hospital has gone up and out, but not worthy to be called a GOOD hospital. INVESTIGATE.

John Adams wrote - I will give the public a good idea why Dr. Simone was fired. Mark Hurd, the former CEO of HP, was let go for doing the same thing.

WellStar staff nurse wrote - Dr Simone never maintained the qualifications to be CEO of such a large corporation. Yes, he developed and managed a successful cardiology practice, but an MBA from that highly respected program at Kennesaw Mountain State University is hardly the place respectable companies find their managers, unless you are hunting for a night manager of the local burger joint.

Kennestone md wrote - A significant number of the medical staff suspected that Wellstar and Dr. Simone were corrupt. Despite excessive lengths of hospital staysand not a favorable payor mix, Wellstar reported very attractive profit margins. Fraudulent billing practices and the purchase of medical specialists, which allowed Wellstar to submit institutional charges for diagnostic services that exceeded pre-purchase prices by three to five times allowed for such profits at taxpaying public's expense.

WellStar md wrote - It is unlikely that the Marietta Daily Journal will do any hard investigation into the facts behind Dr. Simone's firing as a significant amount of it's revenue comes from Wellstar advertisement dollars.

Our 'Muslim' president? ... Unreal!!! Wrote - Joe Kirby...this article is your new low. I'm sitting here wondering who died and made you an editor at MDJ. With regards to your idea of regular attendance at church ... that won't save you. You must live a clean and honest life. Joe, the next time you pray, please ask the Lord, "How can i be more like you Lord?' Be Christlike in your walking and your talking and JUDGE NOT!!!

Bill Press: Glenn Beck and his war on Christians ... Tax man wrote - Hey Bill, Jesus taught us to be charitable with our own money and serve others because whatever we have is a gift from God and we should rejoice in giving. I don't recall him teaching Wright's view that we Christians should demand that the State tax others and give the money to 'us' because 'we' deserve it. Subtle difference don't you think? Isn't it more likely that THIS is Beck's issue with liberation theology? Moron.

WhineBox Press wrote - What a childish, boorish, sniveling excuse for a newpaper column this is. Once again we see Mr. Press' jealosy of Mr. Beck's success writ large.

Bill. Get over it. Your apoligist, redistributionist liberalism doesn't sell...primarily because it is unworkable and actually, just plain wrong. Beck's message communicates: It makes sense to us, the great unwashed. Grow up, Bill. Must you stoop to the level of claiming your Christianity is better than Beck's just to say you are smarter than he is? Apparently so. And in the process you expose yourself as not a very good Christian.

Full court wrote - Well, now the loathsome, hypocritical Mr. Press is attacking Glenn Beck's Mormon religion. Shame on him. In fact, its disgusting.

Bob Sutton, visionary Cobb engineer, dead at 78 ...

Stevethompson mariet wrote - Cobb County will miss Bob Sutton more than it knows. He was of five men responsible for the success and growth of this entire region.

Laura Armstrong: Words to inspire unity at Beck rally draw cynics' fire ...

Harry Hagan wrote - I've just read the comments on your column, Laura.

Dennis Prager made a very cool point that hadn't actually occurred to me. The Picayune whiners from the odiferous left can't point out often enough how white the tea parties are, as well as the Beck rally, etc. Why do they not make the same complaint re symphony concert, opera, and museum attendees? The AP, e.g., will describe as 'overwhelmingly white' a D.C. rally, but never in a critical review of an opera perf, which I love, will they mention that the overwhelming majority was white.

But no one ever accused the left of rational thinking.

Laura Armstrong: New wave of immigrants to U.S. let the khat out of the bag ...

No justice wrote - There appears to be no justice in our country anymore. If someone can't step up and lead us soon, we will be doomed. Frankly, I am sick and tired of hearing about immigrants coming into this country and making no effort to assimilate, or indeed, contribute anything constructive. We need to stop some of this. There are educated people who want into this country. Let's encourage them, perhaps they would help us, rather than hurt us.

Birney Elementary, church establish a food pantry program ...

Mk-feed illegals wrote - Cobb County is becoming more poor, more third world. The Cobb commissioners know this. Tim Lee is safe over there in east Cobb. Chambliss, Gingrey, Isakson, Price- they KNOW where the poor, illiterate, illegal, low-wage labor lives in Cobb County! Keep 'em over here (out of site) .. so the wealthy that own companies hire these illegals can continue to profit! NOBODY wants to face the truth!! If all these illegals that have destroyed all these south Cobb neighborhoods had never been allowed to (invade) in the first place, ... we wouldn't have the NEEDY population that we now have!

The low-wage American workers are being hurt the worst! How many black landscape crews; masonry crews do you see these days? How many Americans do you see on construction jobs; roofing jobs?? I guess as long as the HAVES make sure the HAVE NOTS have food, clothing, ... then we don't have to address the REAL issues!

Marty Girardier - Great idea! I love how the school and church are working together to provide the food that is needed. If you need encouragement in this food pantry ministry please go to http://pantryofpraise .blogspot.com/. God Bless!

Advocates: Art helps students in big picture ...

Jennifer Levitt wrote - Creative problem solving is a crucial life skill, which is cultivated through arts education. Many people fail to realize the numerous indutries that depend on artistic skills and creative vision to thrive. It is important that we continue to support arts programs in our schools and community.

Festival-goers gather in Square for annual Art in the Park event ...

Linda Masi wrote - As a long time resident who has alway enjoyed all the festivies the Square has to offer, I am in total agreement and frustration about allowing dogs in the park during festivals and even the Friday night concerts. Please understand no one loves dogs more than myself but it is actually cruel to allow them to try to walk or do their business in the midst of crowds and we all know the crowds get larger every year.

Plate full of pride ... Jane DeBlieux wrote - I am so proud of Henry but also am not surprised. His passion for good food and good times is what makes him a success! That Louisiana boy sure can cook, and Tommy and I are both so very proud of him.

Cobb Hospital is truly a joke. It is just not right to charge patients and people visiting loved ones parking fees. It's just a way of taking advantage of people. (What's the alternative? NONE!) Another way that people are taken advantage of is the exploitation of some patients who are known by their experience to not get results with initial screenings and therefore require a second appointment to "confirm" that the screening is normal. If it is already known that the first screening will probably require a second, why isn't the second procedure performed first? Sounds like just a money-maker for the hospital. Hopefully, another facility will be more patient friendly. We all need to look for one.

I will continue to work at kennestone but will never promote the hospital or the executives as anything but a crowd of greedy, arrogrant individuals. And please no more of your silly,BS town hall meetings. They will forever be looked upon as jokes....maybe future town hall meetings should be conducted by Dr Wellbee?

Obviousy wellstar and Simone cares nothing about the employees, the patients or the hospitals that have been entrusted to them to manage and care for.Instead of improving hospital conditions and truly producing world class health care they were too busy looting the system's monies for their own benefit.

Apparently wellstar is now into censorship. The Marietta Daily Journal is typically delivered to patients in the Kennestone and Cobb hospitals who are lucid and are able to read. However with all the recent negative news regarding Dr Simone and Wellstar, prior to delivery of the newspaper those sections of the newspaper which contain negative coverage are first removed. And this is an entity that we are to trust with our healthcare? No thank you comrade.

The termination of Dr. Simone will eventually be seen as a huge loss for WellStar and the community. There are always unhappy people who love to make comments based on their worldview. I see many patients every day who are are very happy with their care from WellStar and the medical/nursing staff.

If employees and patients think the care is better elsewhere, I advise them to go there. The overall care at WellStar is excellent and I know that from working in both the Emory system and Piedmont. Healthcare is a tough business - and it is a business. But we always provide the best care care we can to our patients.

It is about time the Wellstar Employee got the chance to verbalize how sorry we are that your loved ones care has deteriorated over the past couple years. Your pink slip was in the mail if we said we were over worked and under staffed. Every Wellstar employee has given the "demanded" 200% because we care about you and your needs. I hope the patient and employee finally gets the much needed help they so honestly deserve. P.S.--sure would like a cross the board raise after all this--we all deserve it.

As a 30 year employee who has "maxed out" in salary, I am sick of the top heavy, too many chiefs...mentality at Wellstar. There is constant construction, talk of how well Wellstar is doing, but the budget doesn't provide for raises for employees (or at least we have not been informed yet even though our evaluations have been done). The number of patients per nurse has been increased due to budget cuts, nurses are given more responsibility every day, but we still need to provide "very good customer service" so we can get "5" on customer service surveys. I don't know about everyone else, but my cost of living has gone up, but not my salary for the last two years and probably this year too.

Dr Simone was nothing more than an arrogant, frontman for an organization that has been sticking it to the taxpaying public for years
