MARIETTA - It's a timeless story that has been retold in many different ways, and it's coming to the Earl Smith Strand Theatre the first week of December.

The Atlanta Lyric Theatre will present the enchanted version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella." Opening night is Dec. 4.

"It's more of a contemporary version in certain ways. It's an exciting, fresher take on the story," said Bradley Bergeron, who plays Prince Christopher. "There are new musical numbers in this version that are more relevant for audiences today."

"Cinderella" tells the story of a young woman living in unfortunate circumstances that suddenly change to remarkable fortune. The director of the Lyric's production, Heidi Cline-McKerley, said the story's theme is universal.

"This rags to riches, nothing is impossible message really applies across all cultures. There's a message of it never being too late to grow up and be all you can be. It's a positive message, and especially great for the holidays," she said. "Cinderella never lets her situation make her become ugly as a person. She remains positive that change will come, and there's something infinitely great about that."

Bergeron said the musical also has a strong love story.

"I think this is a story about the different aspects of love, what love really is and how it's unconditional," he said. "It's a genuine, pure love. The great thing about it being a musical, too, is that it can put words that are so strong into dance and song. The music can convey what an emotional response cannot."

Cline-McKerley said the musical has mass appeal to audiences of all ages.

"I think the biggest thing about it is the family appeal. It's nice to have a musical where the smallest child up to grandma and grandpa can have a good time," she said. "I feel like families are always looking for a moment to step away and experience what live theatre can do. It's electrifying. This play is going to impact folks. We're going to have a great show."
